horizontal directional drilling

Underground directional drilling or horizontal directional drilling is a trenchless method of installing utilities underground. This method is preferred by many as it minimizes the impact on the ground. There is no doubt that directional boring is more versatile and less environmentally harmful compared to other forms of trenching and excavating. However, there are a few things that HDD contractors have to watch out for.

· Difficulties related to the soil: Horizontal drilling can be used in many different environments and is conducive for all soil types. With HDD you can work with rock, sand, silt, and even clay. However, some soil types are not compatible with underground drillingIf the soil has coarse gravel, abrasive rocks, or boulders, they will require specific tooling as well as dual directional drills. If the entire surface of the area is composed of gravelly soil, then other processes might be recommended. This is because HDD in this case will prove to be far more costly.

· Field observation: If there is field observation in place while HDD is going on, it will ensure that things are happening according to plan. Also, changes in the order can be tackled more efficiently with ongoing field observation. You should trust the horizontal directional drilling contractor to execute the orders, but that does not mean that you should skip on the proper documentation. With documentation and daily reports, you make sure that there are no disputes and claims in the future. Without adequate field observation, your project runs the risk of getting slowed down. There is also the risk of claims getting filed against you, which could prolong the project timeline.

· Underestimating installation forces: Some directional drilling companies make the mistake of disregarding the installation stresses and operational stresses. These stresses should be thoroughly understood and planned for. The HDD contractor should be fluent in designing HDD installations. When the directional drilling company computes these factors, the project can be executed as planned, ensuring smooth working.

HDD is a comparatively new technology. As with all new technologies, there is a learning curve associated with it. Clear the above points with your HDD contractor to make sure everything is as scheduled.
